Vinyl Cations

Carbocation cascades are among the most efficient chemical transformations, and prominently used in many biosynthetic pathways towards complex natural products (e.g. terpenoids). Even though carbocations have been studied for decades, approaches that allow for a selective product formation in laboratory settings remain rather elusive. The vinyl cation as a special member of the cation family has not drawn much attention in the past, for it was misconceived to be too reactive for a controllable reaction outcome. This myth has been debunked in 2017 by the Mayr group, breaking the ice for further investigation. Being fascinated by vinyl cation reactivity for several years, we are currently designing strategies that use the special characteristics of vinyl cations for a selective product formation in carbocation chemistry.
